Welcome to 50th Ward Follies

This blog is devoted to the 50th Ward, Chicago. I’ll be writing primarily about the upcoming aldermanic election and the issues the candidates should be discussing. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m tired of hearing about visions for this ward. I’d like to see some plans for action, something the current alderman is either unwilling or unable to deliver.

The issues addressed here are of concern to a lot of folks in the ward, and we’ve frequently engaged in discussions about them on Everyblock.com, where I post as Paco  (a small, intelligent, ferocious MinPin, kind of like his mom).

Let me be clear: I don’t have a dog in this race. I want what I think it best for the ward. I don’t like political double-talk, I hate exaggerated claims about results delivered, and I detest the cynical manipulation of voters to ensure that power remains concentrated in the hands of the few who benefit from maintaining the status quo.  I believe we are seeing the worst of Chicago politics in this race, with a powerful ward organization attempting to split one ethnic voting block to force a run-off or squeak through with a victory in the first round. Meanwhile the ward’s business districts continue to decline, sales tax revenues continue to plunge, and the alderman still has no economic development plan after four years in office. It’s just shameful.

I hope you’ll find my arguments persuasive, and I’d like to hear from you.
